Alfa Romeo’s Electric Vehicle Future

When the Tonale crossover debuts next year, it will signal the commencement of a dramatic shift at Alfa Romeo in Italy.
The Tonale will become the first Alfa vehicle to make use of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It will also be one of the Italian brand's last models to possess an internal combustion engine as by 2027, Alfa has expressed its desire to become all-electric.
It will accompany at least 4 other Stellantis brands, notably Fiat, Opel, DS, and Lancia, in switching to rechargeable battery propulsion by the end of the 2020s. All fourteen of the company's brands will become electric at some point in the future, including Dodge, which plans to release a battery-powered muscle vehicle by the middle of the 2020s.
Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest automotive manufacturer, was formed earlier in 2021 through the combination of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well as the PSA Group. CEO Carlos Tavares revealed the electrification plan for Stellantis, the globe's fourth-largest automotive manufacturer, just about a month earlier. Only a few companies were included at that "Battery Day" event, notably Dodge, Fiat, Ram, and Jeep. The firm is now connecting the dots regarding its other brands.

Since Fiat Chrysler was founded ten years ago, Alfa has gone through a lot of transformations. The business was groomed to develop into one of FCA's most significant under previous CEO Sergio Marchionne. Sales have yet to meet or exceed forecasts. Meanwhile, Marchionne's product strategy, which he unveiled three years ago during a strategy meeting in Italy, has been entirely scrapped or at the very least drastically altered.
The small Tonale crossover, one of Stellantis' main new vehicles, has been postponed another year in order to enhance the plug-in hybrid drivetrain with which it will be marketed. According to initial reports out of Europe, Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato did not believe the sub-Stelvio crossover's drivetrain offered the kind of performance anticipated by the company.

The Tonale is anticipated to be Alfa Romeo's final model to be built on a traditional platform. The new STLA "architecture," one of four new skateboard-like platforms Stellantis is creating for its rechargeable batteries line-up, will support future vehicles, possibly potential successors for the larger Stelvio SUV and Giulia sedan.
Alfa is among the first Stellantis brands to ditch internal combustion, however certain dates are still to be verified. Opel would only offer BEVs overseas in China, but will still continue to provide gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in Europe. Around the middle of the 2020s, Lancia and DS will have gone completely electric with all new models but will keep selling IC versions until they approach the end of their present lifetime. Between 2025 and 2030, Fiat is expected to become a BEV-only brand.
